Screening

Grade-level universal screening is a critical step to identifying students who may need social-emotional or mental health support. Partnering schools determine the grade level to be screened. The screener is conducted through an online portal called REST Connect. It can be administered in a classroom setting, in small groups, or one-on-one in both English and Spanish.

Preparing to Screen

As you prepare to screen, work with your team and principal to determine a time that does not conflict with testing dates and other events on your school’s calendar. Communicate with grade level teachers about the purpose and schedule of the screener. Remember to send out the Passive Consent Form to families and allow 10 days for any forms to be returned.

Day of Screening

To Do’s

A student support services staff and teacher should be present in the room for each class screened. Introduce the screener to the class using the sample script or your own script and consider using the Screener Video to assist with the rationale and directions. It is available in English and Spanish.

The entire screener should be read aloud. Many students will go at their own pace and finish quickly. Read the screener until every student has completed all questions. Remind students to only hit the SUBMIT button one time.

As students complete their screeners, results are immediately available to review. REST Program staff will alert you via email if immediate follow up is needed. Please monitor your email for these alerts.

  • Email Screener links to students
  • Identify opt-out students
    • Implement opt-out plan
  • Print your paper copy of the screener and sample script.
  • If using, have a screen accessible for the Screener Video (English and/or Spanish).
  • Take attendance in each class in order to track absent students for the make-up day.

Adults should monitor for students who may be having a strong reaction to taking the screener and follow up accordingly.

Some students may need help understanding the screener questions. Adults in the room can assist with this.

After Screening is Complete

To Do’s

After you complete the majority of your screening, be sure to check your attendance list for students absent on screening dates. These students can be pulled into small groups, or individually to complete the screener.

Upon viewing results in REST Connect, formulate a document or spreadsheet with students identified for one-on-one student consults.

  • Schedule a “make-up” screening date to screen students absent for the original screening date. Make sure these students were not opted-out.
  • Create a document or spreadsheet with students who need consults.
